Tip:
Finding the perfect dress can take time and patience. For the
bride as well as the bridesmaids. But once you find that perfect
dress, don't forget about the hidden costsalterations. A
survey done nationwide has given us the information for you to
do your own comparison.
Neckline Change: Base rates were quoted as low as $20 to as high
as $100. Mid-range for basic changes was $35-$50 plus the cost
of fabric.
Sleeve length change: Charges began at $20 to $50, with most
starting in the $20 to $30 range. How extensive the alteration,
obviously, determined how high the service fee. It was noted that
shortening a sleeve or adding lace to lengthen a sleeve is much
simpler, and less expensive, than removing a sleeve and adding
one of a different style and/or fabric.
Darts: Pricing ranged from $10 per dart to $60 per gown. $20
was the mid-range per dart charge.
Side Seams: Quotes range from a low of $15-$25 to a high of $100.
The average for basic side seam sewing was $30-$35.
Gussets: PriCes were cited from $15-$25 up to $100-$200, plus
the cost of additional fabric. Median rate of $30-$35 plus material
costs.
Hems: Price differentials here included the dress style and number
of layers, as when dealing with chiffon and tulle. Basic hems
started at a low of $35-$45 and topped out at $250. Charges for
beyond basic ranged from $80 to $250.
Bustles: This is the alteratons area with the most uniformity
in pricing. Most bridal shops charge $6-$7 per loop or point.
Those charging a unit price quote from $30 to $100 for the service.
And, of course, get referrals and recommendations from friends
and referrals from who you meet.
If you get your dresses from a bridal shop, they will usually
have their own seamstress there. This doesn't mean that you need
to have your alterations done there. Check prices and know what
you will be charged ahead of time.
And, of course, have fun and Stay Organized!!
