Tip: Bridal Registries are a time-honored tradition that guide your guests to gifts which meet your expectations. We call this your "wish list". Your guests know exactly what you want, and it's quick and easy to do.

Many specialty and department stores offer a computerized "real-time" registry update--when an item is purchased for someone's registry, it shows up as "bought" at stores across the nation. They can also have handheld barcode scanner "guns" to scan the barcode of each item you want. Many supply suggested checklists that itemize important household items. Once you finish scanning your items, the registry is uploaded into the computer and often can be visited via the Internet by friends, family and guests. Purchases can then be made online, in person or by calling toll-free phone numbers.

It's a good idea to register at more than one location. That way you can receive a variety of items from non-traditional things to the more formal pieces.

It's important to remember basic etiquette when you register. Pick a range of differently priced items. That way your guests can buy gifts you want that are within their means. But don't feel like you must shy away from that couch and matching ottoman you both really want. You will be surprised at what your guests will buy on your registry. They may have a group that will go in on the one big gift and surprise you.

Register at least six months to one year in advance of your wedding date. You need to allow your guests time to browse through your list and give them to shop for your gift.

It is important to register together--don't leave this job to one person. You are selecting items for your new life together and it should be a joint venture. This means compromise also. You may not agree on every item, but there should be an overall blending of your styles and tastes.

In any case, enjoy this time to look together in the same direction.

And most of all, have fun and stay organized!

Fondly,
Marlene
